METHODOLOGY
by Dr. Carol Renaud
Gaffney
The goal is simple: Create relationships
through understanding and great communication
because it is through our relationships that we
can be successful – personally, in our careers
and with our friends. The method for creating
relationships is also very straightforward as
it involves personal understanding, understanding
our jobs and the people we live and work with
and developing and implementing effective skills.
Simply put:
Know Yourself, Know Others, Know the Ropes.
If the idea is so simple, why aren’t we
more successful? Some people are naturally successful
at understanding themselves and others and come
equipped with skills for communicating. There
are some, but not many. The rest of us require
some education, coaching or other sort of development
process to learn this. I’ve found that the
most effective way of learning about ourselves
is to start with reliable, validated time-tested
assessments that can provide information about
Why we do what we do, How we do what we do, and
What we do.
This is really learning the ABCs:
Of ourself:
- What are our Attitudes (Why we do what we
do)
- What are our natural and adapted Behaviors,
(How do we do what we do, often call style),
- What are our Competencies (What skills do
we have and what is the likelihood of acting
on them)?
Of Others:
(When we have our own ABC aha, the light comes
on and we realize that everyone else has their
own story to tell, their ABCs.)
- What are their Attitudes
- What are their natural and adapted Behaviors
or style
- What Competencies do they have and how well
developed are they?
Of Our Jobs:
(Yes, our jobs do talk and if we listen closely
they’ll tell us just what they need.)
- What Attitudes (motivations) are required for
commitment not compliance.
- What Behaviors are most effective for success,
- What Competencies (both hard and soft) are
necessary?
Throughout the readings and sections within this
website you’ll see references to assessments.
There are many assessments available today, but
few of them are comprehensive and address the
Why (A), How (B), What (C) of an individual or
a job – what I refer to as the Total Person
and Total Job Analysis. I have the choice of using
any number of assessments but I’ve made
my selection because they are well researched,
validated and reliable, are easy to complete,
are easy to understand, are comprehensive, and
can be applied to the individual and teams at
Work (as executive and employee), at home (as
partner, parent and child), personally and within
schools (as teacher, administrator and student).
The information is essential for understanding
how we function, how teams function, the importance
of shared values and developing commitment toward
goals. Once we have this information it so easy
to concentrate on our strengths, make choices
about what we need to learn and to see how small
changes can create large rewards as we intentionally
step our way through creating our lives and relating
well to those around us.
